Expectations were that the field in Day 1B of the AUD $1100 buy-in ANZPT Perth Main Event would be larger than the 89 players that turned up for Day 1A. However, when 221 players took their seats at Burswood Casino yesterday, that proved to be a gross understatement. The total field of 310 players is the biggest ever seen at ANZPT Perth and created a total prize pool of AUD $310,000.
With first place set to receive AUD $78,275, Day 1B saw Josh Foster end in pole position on a 143,500 stack, closely followed by Didier Guerin on 136,100. A number of notable players also sat down but couldn’t make it to bagging up time – Aaron Benton, Michael Kanaan, Jessie McKenzie, Gordon Huntly, Vesko Zmukic and Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang were all knocked out.
Huang’s end came when he called the three-bet all in from his opponent on a flop of K♦ 3♣ 5♣ holding K♣ Q♥ for top pair. Unfortunately for Huang, he was up against his opponent’s 5♥ 3♠ bottom two and the 8♦ turn and 2♦ river changed nothing and sent Huang home.
Notables still left in the running from Day 1B include Matthew Carlsson (66,600), Derek Cheung (53,200), Joshua Barrett (30,800), Aleks Lakovic (21,500), Brian McAllister (19,000) and Kristina Griffiths (17,300).
Day 2 starts at 12.30pm today when 136 players will return to the felt and hope to make it in the money.
